Trading is relatively limited in the export oriented tilapia supply chain as a result of the high level of vertical integration. In general, producers harvest an entire pond at once. Sometimes this is done by a team employed directly by the farm owner, but in many cases the companies make use of a service provider specialized in harvesting and transport.
If farms are located on the same premises as the factories, the fish is mostly carried to the factory with the support of small boats or trucks. When farms are located further away from the factories, the fish is removed from the pond and carried to a boat that transports the fish alive to the factory. This is done by special boats that have tank systems with open holes to let the river water run through. Such boats can carry up to 60 tonnes of live fish in one transport. Travel times from the farm to the factory can take from 2 to 10 hours.
